Best Hiking Near Sheridan, Wyoming

As the snow melts on another spring in Sheridan, hikers from all over will be descending on the area in search of outdoor adventure. The Sheridan area offers something for outdoor enthusiasts of all skill levels. The surrounding hills and mountains are home to some of the most scenic views and interesting animals in the world.

If you are looking for a place to stoke your outdoor adventure this summer, here are a few places to consider in the Sheridan, Wyoming area.

Big Horn National Forest

The Big Horn National Forest is vast and it’s difficult to pick just one or two key spots out of the nearly one hundred potential hiking and backpacking trails. You can’t go wrong with any of the trails and it’s possible to get lost in the area for the entire summer. True enthusiasts of the area love coming to the Big Horns to find daily adventures on the trails.

There are a couple favorite places for hiking in the Big Horn National Forest, though.

Coffeen Park

This campground offers a place for families to really get off the main roads and enjoy a little rugged adventure. The campground turns into the Coffeen Park hiking trail where families or couples can go miles into the wilderness. You can stay on the trail or venture off to discover your own sights and sounds.

The area is located in the heart of the Big Horn National Forest. The trail is located on markers in the park and is to navigate if you’re looking for a stress-free day hike.

Twin Lakes

The Twin Lakes area is popular for adventurists as well. The area hosts some of the most beautiful and scenic water areas in all of the West. The trails lead out to Twin Lakes, but you’ll be getting away from civilization so plan on bringing supplies for at least a day. This could be a fun adventure that you’ll never forget and you’ll be left wanting to come back.

Tongue River

The Tongue River area is one of the most popular destinations in the Sheridan, Wyoming area. It’s located just West and North of the Sheridan area. You can take a car ride there in the morning and plan on spending the day or even a few days out in the wilderness. It’s easy to turn this destination into a full weekend trip. You can come as part of your visit to the Sheridan area and really find something for all levels of hiking at Tongue River.

The trail is rugged and likely more than enough for the novice hiker. You’ll want to have some experience if you plan on getting deep into the Tongue River trail area.

The reviews of Tongue River are positive. People come back multiple times to enjoy the scenery throughout the Tongue River hiking system.

Cloud Peak

Just a short ways out of Sheridan is the Cloud Peak area. The area is managed by the Big Horn National Forest. The trail system is vast and so are the mountain peaks. You can go high up and really get away from the city life as you get lost in the scenes of the beautiful Big Horns.

A few lakes are nestled on the way to the actual summit of Cloud Peak. You can try to ascend, but the trail system is enough for most folks that visit the area.

Cloud Peak is one of the most scenic destinations in all of Wyoming. It’s both challenging and fun for those looking for a hiking adventure during the summertime.
